How to Choose a Gynecologist

How to Choose a Gynecologist

How Do I Find a Gynecologist Near Me?

Choosing a gynecologist can be a stressful and exhausting process. You can even go through multiple, uncomfortable exams before you find the doctor perfect for you. That’s not fun! Here are some pointers to help you find your way.

Gynecologist Reviews Matter!

Reviews! We all rely on the recommendations of others to make our most important decisions. Online gynecologist reviews give you another way to  find recommendations that just happen to be from strangers. Just remember to take them with a grain of salt because places like Yelp, Google and other review websites allow people to unload all their emotions! It’s entirely possible for some reviewers to project unrelated emotions onto a business.

What should you look for in an OB/GYN review?

  • Office environment
  • Staff friendliness
  • Physicians’ bedside manner
  • Trustworthiness
  • Wait time averages
  • How easy it is to schedule appointments
  • Time taken to explain all your concerns

Find a Recommended OB/GYN

“So, how do I find an OB/GYN near me?” Like many things in our lives, you may look for personal recommendations from friends and family. When you’re searching for an OB/GYN you should also take your primary care physician’s recommendations—after all, it’s within their realm of expertise.  Primary Care Physicians can vouch for fellow doctors that they feel will fit your specific medical needs.

When you ask for recommendations, be sure to ask about their skills, their areas of specialization, their experience and their bedside manner.

They have ample experience

A physician’s credentials should be easily obtained online whether it’s on the site offering the reviews or the practice’s direct website.  What information should be publicly provided to the patient?

  • The doctor’s medical school and where their residency was completed
  • Are they board certified? Board eligible?
  • How many years have they been in practice?
  • Which hospitals are they affiliated with and do they have full privileges?
  • What specialties do they have?
  • Have they had any major complaints, disciplinary actions or malpractice suits filed against them?
They accept your insurance plan

This is a big one! Insurance.

Healthcare can become very expensive, very quickly – especially if you have no insurance or your plan doesn’t cover the specific visit. Most insurance plans cover preventative care appointments but it is always recommended to get familiar with your specific coverage plan.

They share similar values and beliefs

Having a doctor that shares your same values can be extremely important in your decision. Your OB/GYN will be discussing birth control, pregnancy, possible procedures and having different values can become uncomfortable if you don’t agree with each other based on spiritual or religious beliefs.

Great bedside manner

There’s nothing worse than walking into a doctor’s appointment eager to voice all your concerns and a physician completely dismissing you. A doctor can be the most prestigious physician with years and years of expertise but if they treat you like just another chart then they may not be the OB/GYN for you. Find a doctor that listens to your concerns, whether it’s one big thing or a dozen small ones. You pay for insurance, paid your co-pay – you should be given the time.

You feel comfortable with them

Let’s face it – OB/GYN appointments aren’t the most comfortable. You have to undress and be asked extremely personal questions that can really embarrass you. It’s very important to feel comfortable enough to be able to fully let your guard down and have this conversation with your doctor. There used to be a higher abundance of male gynecologists but according to the LA Times, “In 1970, 7% of gynecologists were women. Now 59% are.”

Consider changing your doctor to a female if you think you might be more comfortable discussing your issues. Aside from accepting your insurance and being in your network, always factor in who is going to give you the best care, who is available when you need them.
